Mizoram govt to form committee on corporal punishment

Aizawl, July 30 Growing complaints of corporal punishments in educational institutions have prompted the Mizoram government to form a committee to study such cases well as ragging in schools across the state.

“A committee would be formed within a month and would undertake extensive study on the reported cases of corporal punishment and ragging all over the state,” an official in the state Social Welfare department said.

Mizoram, which hold second position in literacy, also holds the same rank in corporal punishment in the country, according to a study conducted by UNICEF.

About 90.86 per cent of students in the state are victims of corporal punishment as compared to Assam’s 99.56 per cent, the study said.

In the latest case, a class ten student staying at the school’s hostel in Serchhip town was allegedly beaten up by the drunken hostel warden On July 11.
