Tech Support: How to speed up Computer, Internet?

Posted on 21 February 2010

By following a few simple guidelines, you can maintain your computer and keep it running smoothly and better performance.

1. Free up disk space

To use Disk Cleanup

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

2. Disk Defragmenter

To use Disk Defragmenter:

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

3. %temp%

Click Start, Click Run, Type %temp% and Click Ok button and delete all files.

4. Prefetch

Click Start, Click Run, Type prefetch and Click Ok button and delete all files.

5. Do not run too many programs at Windows startup. Lots of programs load at once when booting up the computer will make the computer run desperately slow because of the insufficient system resources and memory. Go to Start, Run, type “msconfig” and press “Enter” to access System Configuration Utility, check “Startup” tab and uncheck the programs that do not need to run at Windows startup.

6. Do not use the ActiveDesktop. Otherwise, the system will run extremely slow. Open Group Policy by typing “gpedit.msc” within “Run” ->User Configuration ->Administrative Templates -> Desktop -> locate and disable Active Desktop.

I have managed to do a full cleanup using CCleaner and also defragged my drive that had only about 6% free space using a third party automatic defrag program. I am still stuck on the boot though, tried reducing startup programs and with 2GB RAM I wish it would startup faster.

Most PC/Laptop users install to much system software/application software in their Computer which make system slow. Install less softwares for better performance. Try to have a habit of switching off your system when not in use. Buy Norton 360 Version 4 ($79.99) and install it in your system and live update it on internet. Do full scanning very often. Do Disk Cleanup,Disk Defragmenter,%temp%,Prefetch every day.

What is the difference between application software and system software?

System software is an essential part of computer operations. The function of the systems software is to manage the resources of the computer, automate its operation and facilitate program development. It is generally provided by the computer manufacturer or a specialized programming firm (for example: Microsoft is a company that specializes in system software).

While, the Application software are designed to perform specific data processing or computational tasks for the user. These programs are specifically designed to meet end-user requirements. (e.g: spreadsheets, word processors, media players and database applications).

Difference between system software and application software?

Actually, a system software is any computer software which manages and controls computer hardware so that application software can perform a task. Operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, are prominent examples of system software. System software contrasts with application software, which are programs that enable the end-user to perform specific, productive tasks, such as word processing or image manipulation.

System software performs tasks like transferring data from memory to disk, or rendering text onto a display device. Specific kinds of system software include loading programs, operating systems, device drivers, programming tools, compilers, assemblers, linkers, and utility software.

Multiple applications bundled together as a package are sometimes referred to as an application suite. Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org, which bundle together a word processor, a spreadsheet, and several other discrete applications, are typical
examples. The separate applications in a suite usually have a user interface that has some commonality making it easier for the user to learn and use each application. And often they may have some capability to interact with each other in ways beneficial to the user. For example, a spreadsheet might be able to be embedded in a word processor document even though it had been created in the separate spreadsheet application.
